All of you newly arrived language students from the U.S. or Europe can beat a hasty stroll over to the two popular hangouts for Westerners near Xiamen University. The first is Heitang Coffee (黑糖咖啡) which is a bit hidden, and the second is the larger and more spacious Relax Coffee next to McDonalds on Siming Nan Lu. There's nothing particularly spectacular about this coffeehouse other than it's warm dark wooden interior and it's open patio (although it gets too loud and smoggy outside sitting next to the crowded city street). The food is of mediocre quality -- steaks and spaghettis -- and you can find stronger coffee for late night studying at Heitang. Nonetheless, it's a good lunch and chat spot and you might even be able to get some studying in. On the whole, however, if you walk that extra block, you can make it to the brighter and more appealing Heitang which I find has better coffee and more interesting CDs and magazines to peruse through.
